I can imagine each of these little vent covers to be the home of some small creature, like a fairie or an elf. I bet they get up early, before the ice melts and slip and slide all over the roof.

Melinda - this is my rooftop on the east side of my deck. It doesn't freeze often, so the morning we did have ice on the deck, I ran out in my pj's and took a photo.
that looks just like you said! almost like little houseboats on a lake! The round red-topped one could be the lighthouse!
